I’ve shot a crazy number of marching band and drum corps photos in recent years. And when I think I’ve seen it all, this ensemble at Dixie Heights shows up and just blows my mind.
It’s not just the discipline and proficiency that have come to characterize Dixie’s culture. It’s the boundless joy with which these kids take the field, and the way it never seems to fade.
Hours after their four-point jump to a silver medal with best-percussion and best-visuals accolades in this year’s Mid States Class 4A Championship, the Marching Colonels weren’t finished. They repeated a proud Dixie tradition and delighted the home crowd in their final public performance of “Catching Fireflies” (this year’s show) in Edgewood, Kentucky.
Just one more competition run remains. Dixie Heights will return to Bands of America Grand Nationals for prelims on Friday. If you’re not doing anything, tickets for the event at Lucas Oil Stadium start at $37 on StubHub.
